V. Satir

Virginia Satir (1916-1988) is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the field of family therapy, a highly creative caregiver who supported the essential goodness of others. Her conviction was that people are capable of continued growth, change and new understanding. Her focus on building each individual’s self-worth led to improving relationships and communication within the family unit.

Her main works include Conjoint Family Therapy, New Peoplemaking, and The Satir Model; Family Therapy and Beyond. In her later years, her focus moved toward world peace. She established the Avanta network and therapeutic training institutes around the globe. Tapes of her work with clients and families in crises are available for professional development.

Satir’s mission to facilitate human growth came from a deeply held spiritual belief in the positive nature and the unlimited potential of Life itself. She referred to her therapeutic goals as “peace within, peace between, and peace among.”
